Education

Broome Surf Life Saving Club runs a number of surf lifesaving education courses throughout the year; including the Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion. The Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion are key awards, assisting with the delivery of lifesaving activities and additional awards; e.g. Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and IRB Drivers. The club provides support to members who wish to gain surf lifesaving qualifications, and encourages each member to undertake as many qualifications as possible.

After receiving a Bronze Medallion, members can further enhance their surf lifesaving skills by undertaking courses for the following awards:

  • ARTC – Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate

  • Senior First Aid Certificate

  • Spinal Management Certificate

  • Pain Management Certificate

  • Radio Operators Certificate

  • IRB crew certificate

  • Silver Medallion – IRB Driver

  • Silver Medallion – Basic Beach Management

  • Gold Medallion

  • Training Officer Certificate

  • Assessor Certificate

Club members need to have their Bronze Medallion to be eligible to use club equipment, compete and volunteer on patrols.  Participants need to be at least 15 years of age and be able to swim 400 meters in 9 minutes or less in a pool environment. Bronze Medallion training includes surf awareness and survival, patrol and rescue procedures, anatomy and physiology and emergency care.

When members reach the U14s age group, they can complete their Surf Rescue Certificate as a precursor for the Bronze Medallion. Participants must swim 200 meters in 5 minutes or less, in a swimming pool as a prerequisite. Training involves surf awareness, basic first aid, resuscitation, surf skills, rescue techniques and patrols.

Our junior Nipper members (up to and including our U14 group) undertake a structured surf education syllabus. Through this program the children learn surf awareness and surf safety, along with many surf lifesaving skills. Parents of our Junior Activity members are encouraged to become members of the club and join in by assisting with activities.  See the Nippers tab for more information.
