Artist Bio - Jasmine John
My name is Jasmine, and I am a 23- year-old Nyikina woman from Broome, who currently resides in Perth to study Occupational Therapy. I began my painting journey in 2018 when fundraising for my Recreational Skipper’s Ticket, so I could take family out fishing. Since then, I have developed into an established artist completing commissions across Australia and have even been offered international opportunities! My painting style reflects my own understand of my Aboriginal heritage. Being significantly impacted by the Stolen Generations, my great grandmother and grandfather have never had the opportunity to pass down her stories and knowledge. As such I have established an intricate and detailed style of painting, to express my own stories and interpretations. Studying away from family is difficult and I often feel homesick for the beautiful Broome beaches. My artistic expression provides me with an opportunity to connect with my culture, Country, family and further strengthens my identity.
