The courses we offer help you build essential rescue and first aid skills while connecting with fellow members who share a commitment to keeping our beaches safe.

What education programs do we offer?
Broome Surf Life Saving Club runs a number of surf lifesaving education courses throughout the year; including the Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion. The Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion are key awards, assisting with the delivery of lifesaving activities and additional awards; e.g. Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and IRB Drivers.
In addition, the club provides support to members who wish to gain surf lifesaving qualifications, and encourages each member to undertake as many qualifications as possible.
Who can join and what do they need?
Every Australian can help save a life. On the sand and in the surf, people just like you step up to the challenge to become lifesavers; to own the coast and love the coast.
Becoming a surf lifesaver is the epitome of a fit and healthy lifestyle. It’s joining a community, making new mates and giving something back to your local community. It’s being your best self. It’s learning and teaching in a supportive environment. Whether it’s patrolling, surf sport comps or training the next generation, our members agree it’s nothing short of rewarding
The Community Surf Rescue Course is a precursor to the Bronze Medallion. Information regarding both it outlined below.

What is the Community Surf Rescue Certificate?
The Community Surf Rescue Certificate provides candidates with skills and knowledge of aquatic safety, rescue and survival skill techniques for supervising students participating in activities both in and around various aquatic environments.
Candidates will be required to demonstrate various surf rescues, basic first aid skills, supervision skills in an open water environment and identifying potential risks. The certificate is recognised by the Department of Education and Training water safety guidelines for supervision of children in both open and closed aquatic environments and is suitable for anyone over the age of 13.

Is this something already delivered in Nippers?
Our junior Nipper members (up to and including our U14 group) undertake a structured surf education syllabus. Through this program the children learn surf awareness and surf safety, along with many surf lifesaving skills.
When members reach the U14s age group, they can complete their Surf Rescue Certificate as a precursor for the Bronze Medallion. Participants must swim 200 meters in 5 minutes or less, in a swimming pool as a prerequisite. Training involves surf awareness, basic first aid, resuscitation, surf skills, rescue techniques and patrols.
Parents of our Junior Activity members are encouraged to become members of the club and join in by assisting with activities. See the Nippers tab for more information.

What happens during the course?
Over 6 - 8 weeks you’ll meet new people, work as a team and build new skills that could save lives! There’s one - two training sessions a week. The evening sessions (in the clubrooms) focus on resuscitation, first aid and radio communications. Sunday morning sessions are on the beach and in the ocean, where you’ll develop surf awareness and learn board, tube and spinal injury rescue techniques.
Assessment
Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios. This will take place on the final day of the course.
The assessment is divided up into 12 assessment tasks as listed in the table below. Pre-assessment tasks are to be completed prior to the dry and wet assessments.
How fit do you need to be?
Bronze does have a fitness element, but there’s no need to be daunted by this. A diverse range of candidates have achieved their Bronze. There is the pre- requisite 400m pool swim and then there is the 200m Run / 200m swim / 200m run under 9min for the final assessment. During our Sunday training sessions, we will practice our run swim run to build up our fitness. We also have a 400m club swim every Sunday at 10.30 that you can join in.
If you require additional swimming sessions BRAC has a swim group that meets twice a week and it is run by a qualified coach. Contact BRAC for more information.
Accreditation
Participants will receive their Bronze Medallion upon successful completion. This award is recognised by SLSA to be able to participate in Surf Life Saving patrol operations.
